Personal history
Skylar lived a fairly average life up until the parasite epidemic. At a young age his father left him and his mother for not being able to handle the pressures of having a wife and child. Skylar was only five at the time though and didn’t really remember much about the man except that his mother was very hurt by the experience. Dealing with the stresses of raising a child on her own and being a nurse did take a toll on his mother, but nonetheless she always remained there for her son.
During his elementary school life, Skylar had a hard time making friends because of his shy nature. He even had a bit of a bully problem because he didn’t like to play rough like other boys and often enjoyed reading by himself. It took a toll on his confidence and made him more reserved and soft spoken. Every day he would come home in tears, but, every time his mother would come and wipe his tears. It got to the point that he wasn’t sure what to do about his bullies, however. His mother though began to teach him of religion and of faith and to be a better person than his bullies he needed to learn to forgive them and help them and try to help them with their problems. So, he adopted this ideology that even when he was bullied, even when he was shy, he managed each time to say he forgave them.
It still didn’t stop them from bullying him, but, he began not to mind as much. After all, if this was the way for them to work out their issues he was okay if they made fun of him. He even verbalized it once, which completely threw them off. In time they just left him alone all together.
On the whole though, life was like any other child’s.
But, once the Panic Disorder, that all changed. When it began, Skylar and his mother had to flee their neighbourhood as people on the street began to go insane and attack people. Those who died that were infected became piles of moss, for the Parasite would eat away quickly at the people’s lives and leave nothing else behind that was the person. Skylar managed to avoid being uninfected; the same couldn’t be said for his mother though.
At first it went unnoticed. His mother still acted like the kindly woman he always knew. But, as the as the days proceeded the virus began to show more and more. His mother began showing violent tendencies in the hospital they were staying in, such as breaking things and shoving people and yelling. This went unnoticed however since the workers because of all the incoming refugees. On the final day of her infection she went into crazy frenzy. She began killing anyone in sight with a scalpel, Skylar was next but his cries awakened her long enough to see what she had done. Stricken with grief and despair she had taken the scalpel and plunged it into her neck.
The moment she died was the moment her parasite rapidly ate away at her leaving nothing but her clothes left. Horrified by the sight, Skylar didn’t have much time to think until the Parasite soon clung to him. Skylar was of the lucky few though. He had the rare mutation in his DNA that allowed him to become a host for the parasite.
Skylar soon fled from the scene, not wanting to look back on the horrors that befell his mother. In time he soon realized he was infected when he had been attacked by a group of teenagers looking for kids to hand over to the research facilities to collect money they were offering for test subjects. He had unintentionally infected those teens because his parasite saw them as a threat and instantly killed them. Scared and depressed he ran even further to try and hide from people dying of the infection.
But he soon realized it wasn’t the Panic disorder killing people that were trying to kidnap him. It was him, or, rather the parasite he soon realized that he was host to that was doing the killing. Frightened and scared he went into further seclusion to avoid hurting people.
He was alone for a year after his mother’s death, having survived off of scavenging for food and water and occasionally taking shelter in hospitals. He would always avoid people if he came by them, in fear that he would kill them like he did those teenagers. But, he managed to get control over it, realizing what his parasite was capable of more than killing. Strengths:
Physical
Having a parasite, Skylar is given a unique ability like many hosts often get with their parasite. Skylar is capable of healing people with it. How it works is that he utilizes his parasite to release very tiny glowing spores on the wound. What happens is that when the spores make contact with the offending wound, they mimic and become human stem cells. The wound can be then healed. Hypothetically this could allow Skylar to regrow lost limbs on people because of the spores transforming into human stem cells.
Skylar, when he could get his hands on ingredients is a very good cook. He would often handle the cooking for his gang, much to the protests of his group members (mainly because Skylar is considered royalty.)
He learned to sew at a young age and has continued to do so throughout his life. He has gotten to the point where he can make clothes. Often, he will make clothes for the members of his ‘Gang’.
He’s capable of first aid as well, having learned it from his mother before she died.
Emotional
Skylar has a remarkable capacity to forgive. Since he was so immersed in religion and spirituality at a young age, he developed a very forgiving nature. He’s able to turn the other cheek to those who harm him. When Skylar deals with people who cause harm to others, he attempts to understand where the other is coming from. He doesn’t preach, he just offers an ear to listen to. In a sense he takes the ideology of “Love the sinner. Hate the sin.” He will care for the evil doer but he will disapprove of the terrible actions they do. This only actually applies to TRULY evil acts, such as, murder, rape, torture, pretty much what a moral human being would find detesting.
Mental
Since the school system didn’t go straight to hell before 2012, Skylar is able to read, do write, and do a bit of math. When the epidemic hit, Skylar had to learn how to survive. Sure, supplies and medicine could be found, but were scarce when there weren’t any drops. So, Skylar learned types of herbs for medicine.
Weaknesses: Physical
Downside to having a parasite is the constant feeding. Skylar must eat more than a normal person to keep the parasite fed and continually producing spores. If not, he grows weak and sickly because of the Parasite needing nourishment. Another draw back is the healing ability this parasite has. The parasite only produces so many spores a day. When that allotted total is used up the user can’t heal unless they suffer terrible side effects. These side effects being that the parasite will spread a bit to try and find food else where…being the host’s own body. First it will start siphoning off his blood which makes him become very light headed and drowsy. If pushed further it will spread a bit towards the first internal it can get to, which is the lungs. When this happens it will start trying to feed on the membrane of the lungs, but this causes irritation and pain and so Skylar tends to vomit a pool of blood. When it gets to that stage Skylar can no longer continue healing without life long damaging side effects.
Because Skylar tends to over use his parasite a lot he is very frail and prone to sickness. He gets tired very easily. He’s not exactly the most coordinated and can be slightly clumsy when he walks or runs. He’s not strong and has difficulty carrying something that would be considering a moderate weight for a healthy person.
Since Skylar is a pacifist he doesn’t know how to fight. Therefore, he can’t defend himself. But, that’s never mattered when you have an army of pawns who protect you…even though he doesn’t like that either.
Emotional
Since Skylar is very shy he has a hard time speaking or socializing with others. His forgiving nature also can lead to people taking advantage of him, because he can be too forgiving. He also has a naïve belief that all the gangs could work together in peace.
He has no leadership skills even though he’s the King of his gang so has to opt for one of his close friends to do it for him.
There’s also the fact he believes himself to be a monster for being a parasite host. Since, all those who are infected with his parasite can die if he dies or being able to kill them.
Mental
So, eleven years old is a bad time to have a virus epidemic happen that’s like an apocalypse. So, Skylar has had no high school education. He has trouble reading passed a sixth grade reading level.
